How to make kale chips the simple way

Turn your leafy green kale into chips, now that’s what I’m talking about!  What a great way to enjoy the health benefits of kale.  Sometimes it’s good to try a healthy alternative to the daily juices, smoothies, and salads. Through trial and error, I have perfected my cooking method.  It’s so much fun, even the family might want to join in.  If not, they are sure to eat some of these tasty treats.  I would like to share my kale chips secret, so you can avoid the mistakes I experienced.

Preperation

How you prepare your kale is key to a successful delicious chip.  I always enjoy the vibrant taste of organic kale best.  It’s not necessary though, remember to wash your leaves well before you begin.  Go ahead and de-rib the leaves.  I usually just use my hands to tear them off, then place them in a bowl.  Next, get some extra virgin olive oil.  Drizzle a good amount of olive oil over your kale in the bowl.  The next part is tedious, but can be relaxing at the same time.  This part is crucial to a good kale chip recipe.  Use your fingers to go over each kale one by one, making sure the entire leaf is covered with oil!

Cooking

Spread your oiled kale leaves on a cooking tray side by side.  Make sure none of them are on top of each other. This is essential to a evenly cooked crispy chip.  Your kale chips will shrink in size after baking.  Set your oven to 350 degrees and place the tray in the middle rack.  Set your timer for 10 minutes and keep an eye on them.  10 minutes is the perfect time for me, you can keep them in for a couple extra minutes if you want them a little darker.  Pull them out when they are ready, and get ready for some seasoning!

Seasoning

I highly recommend seasoning your kale chips after you cook them.  This will help cook them to the perfect consistency.  I’ve noticed if I season them before, they don’t cook as well.  I always sprinkle some sea salt, covering all the chips.  If I’m in the mood for a little spice, I’ll add some cayenne pepper or paprika. Everyone’s taste buds are different so add a seasoning of your choice.

Enjoy!

After adding your seasoning, let them cool a little bit and call the family.  They are best when they are slightly warm.  Enjoy the crispy benefits of your homemade kale chips!  They will sure impress your family, and make you feel good about cooking your own.
