I know from personal experience that depression can negatively impact our lives in so many ways. It can effect our relationships, work, and even our health. However, there are some natural ways to beat the blues that have been holding you back from your true self.
1. Quit Using Drugs
Try giving up that bad smoking habit, limit your caffeine consumption, and give up the alcohol. I know some of you think this is impossible, however, your brain will thank you in the long run. When we use these mind-altering substances it changes our brain chemistry. The goal is to get our brain to its normal state without relying on that temporary boost from the use of drugs. You will eventually be reintroduced to yourself that you forgot existed.
2. Exercise Daily
Exercising will give your body a dose of endorphins, the feel good hormone. These endorphins will help you kick the bad habits from above as well. I found that running and getting that natural high was one of the best habits I adapted to beat depression. Try working out your whole body as well. You will start seeing changing in your body that will positively effect your mind also. Start off with 5 minutes a day and build up as you increase your endurance. I always imagine myself running from my depression and found that I always leave the blues behind.
3. Eat Healthy
Did you know the body and brain needs certain nutrients for it to function properly? Some of these nutrients only come from foods that we eat. If we don’t eat them on a daily basis you will see a decline in your optimal self. Tryptophan is an α-amino acid that is only comes from certain protein based foods. This amino acid is converted into serotonin, the feel good hormone. When we have a well balanced healthy diet we will see a increase in hormones that keep our bodies functioning properly.
4. Try Herbs and Supplements
Supplementing herbs with the 3 lifestyle changing above is sure to help you beat that depression. Herbs like St. John’s wort act as natural SSRI’s you might get from the doctor without the nasty side effects. It can inhibit the re-uptake of serotonin leaving you feeling happier and relaxed. Drinking an oolong tea can increase GABA activity in your brain from the L-theanine protein. GABA is a key neurotransmitter in your brain for stress relief. These two herbs or just a couple of many remedies that will help you along to finding your true natural self.
